Mammography

The Essential Breast Imaging Technique

Mammography is a specialized medical imaging technique used to visualize the internal structure of the breast. Employing a low-dose X-ray system, it aids in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women.

Mammograms play a crucial role in early breast cancer detection and help decrease breast cancer deaths. They can detect tumors that cannot be felt and can find cancers before symptoms develop, increasing the chances of successful treatment.

  • Types of Mammography: There are two main types of mammograms - screening and diagnostic. Screening mammograms are routine checks, while diagnostic mammograms investigate suspicious breast changes.
  • Digital vs. Film Mammograms: Modern mammography techniques include digital mammograms and older film mammograms. Digital methods are stored on a computer, making them easier to manipulate and interpret.
  • 3D Mammography: Also known as breast tomosynthesis, it captures multiple images of the breast from different angles, providing a more detailed view.

Although mammography is a potent tool, no test is perfect. It may miss some cancers, or sometimes, abnormalities found aren't cancers. It's crucial for women to also practice breast self-exams and regular clinical breast exams.

Safety and Risks

Mammography involves exposure to low-dose radiation but the risk of harm is considered low. The benefits of early detection and treatment outweigh the potential risks.
